You Are Not Your Name: The Prayer Of Jabez That Changed Everything
You Are Not Your Name: The Prayer of Jabez That Changed Everything
Based on 1 Chronicles 4:9–10
In a quiet corner of the Old Testament—tucked between long lists of genealogies—there’s a story that shines like a hidden gem. Just two verses, yet they carry a message that can rewrite your entire story.
His name was Jabez. And his name literally meant “sorrow” or “he causes pain.” His mother gave him that name because of the pain she experienced in childbirth. Imagine growing up carrying that label. Every time someone called his name, they were repeating his pain. But Jabez did something most people wouldn’t expect: he turned to God.
The Bible says he was “more honorable than his brothers.” Not because of money, fame, or family name. He was honorable because of his faith. Because of his heart. Because he didn’t let the pain that named him be the pain that defined him.
In 1 Chronicles 4:10, we find his simple but powerful prayer. It contains four life-changing requests:
“Oh, that You would bless me indeed!”
Jabez wasn’t looking for material riches. He was asking for the kind of blessing that only God can give—peace, purpose, favor, and identity. He dared to believe that, despite his painful beginnings, his life could be marked by divine goodness.
“Enlarge my territory!”
This wasn’t just about land. It was a request for more impact, more opportunity, and more capacity to do good. Jabez asked God to expand his influence beyond the sorrow that tried to confine him.
“That Your hand would be with me!”
Jabez didn’t want to walk this journey alone. He asked for God’s hand—His guidance, His strength, and His constant presence. Like Moses, he knew that no blessing meant anything without God beside him.
“Keep me from harm so that I may not cause pain.”
This is where it gets personal. Jabez asked God to break the cycle. To free him from the very thing his name symbolized. It was a cry not just to avoid suffering—but to live redeemed from it.
And here’s the best part: “And God granted him what he requested.”
Maybe today, you feel like your name is Rejected, Broken, Not Enough, or Too Late. But like Jabez, you can pray. You can ask God to bless you, to expand your life, to walk with you, and to heal what has hurt you. And the same God who answered Jabez still answers today.
You are not your past. You are not your pain. Your beginning does not define your destiny.
Pray boldly. Live expectantly. Because God still writes beautiful endings for those who call on His name.
