Counting All Things but Loss for Christ

"But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ." – Philippians 3:7-8 (KJV)

These words from the Apostle Paul challenge us to reconsider what truly matters in life. In a world that measures success by wealth, status, and achievements, Paul’s declaration sounds radical. He tells us that everything he once valued—his pedigree, his education, his religious accomplishments—became worthless when compared to knowing Christ.

The Value of Earthly Gain

Before encountering Christ, Paul had everything a religious leader of his time could desire. He was a Pharisee, well-educated under Gamaliel, and zealous in following the law (Philippians 3:4-6). By worldly standards, he was successful. Yet, he willingly gave it all up because he discovered something far greater: a relationship with Jesus Christ.

This message speaks powerfully to us today. Society tells us that our worth is measured by our career, possessions, or social status. We work tirelessly to accumulate wealth, secure promotions, and gain recognition. While these things are not inherently wrong, they become dangerous when they take priority over our relationship with God. Paul reminds us that anything we pursue outside of Christ is ultimately temporary.

What Does It Mean to Count It All Loss?

To "count all things but loss" does not necessarily mean giving away all our possessions or abandoning our responsibilities. Rather, it means shifting our priorities. It is a call to examine what holds first place in our hearts.

  • Do we value material success more than spiritual growth?
  • Are we willing to let go of sinful habits, pride, or personal ambitions that hinder our relationship with Christ?
  • Do we trust God enough to surrender our plans and accept His will?

When we place Christ above all else, we gain something priceless: “the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.” Knowing Christ is not just about having religious knowledge; it is about having a personal, deep, and transformative relationship with Him.

Winning Christ: The Greatest Treasure

Paul’s words remind us that true riches are found in Christ alone. The world offers temporary pleasures, but Christ offers eternal life, peace, joy, and fulfillment that nothing else can match.

As believers, we are called to set our hearts on things above (Colossians 3:2) and seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). When we do this, we discover that even if we lose everything in this world, we have gained everything in Christ.

May we, like Paul, declare with confidence that nothing compares to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus. Let us hold loosely to the things of this world and cling tightly to our Savior.
